Choosing a name for our blog wasn't easy. We knew our concept and our angle and wanted to choose something that would make sense, and maybe even be a little catchy. In discussing the two different angles we have-- one a full-time career mom and one a full-time stay-at-home mom-- we realized that there is a "gap" in the middle. We thought that in providing a place to discuss working mom vs stay-at-home mom issues and struggles with each other and with other mommies, we might be able to bridge that gap. Thus, the blog may actually become "the gap" in between the two worlds that helps us all achieve a middle ground.
In doing some research, we came across some other definitions of the "mommy gap." It has been used as a term for the gap in pay between moms who take time off to have children and the ones who don't. A writer at Harvard used the term to describe the gap between women who choose to marry and have children later in life and those who marry and have children young. We have even seen the term used to define postpartum depression.
Our definition takes on a different spin-- in short, "the gap" between career moms and stay-at-homers. And since many women are quite staunch on the side in which they fall, this blog will hopefully be a spot to share the reasons for our choices, how we feel about the choices we've made, and the everyday parenting stories that come with these choices.
It seems that the line between stay-at-home moms and career moms has been drawn in the sand. We hope this blog will begin to toe that line, and help us realize that we have more in common than we thought.
I think this is a great blog. I have seen many shows where the two sides are at each others throats and it makes me sad. We are all moms and we should be supporting one another not dragging the other down.
ReplyDeleteI am a SAHM mom (although I did just start my own business, but I work at night) of 2 kids and I feel blessed, but my mom worked through my whole childhood because she had too and I do not feel that one is right or wrong...I think you have to do what is best for your family. :)
Keep it up.
