"Mommy Personalities"

So I am watching Sister Wives (a reality show on TLC about a polygamist family with 4 wives, for those of you who are not reality addicts like myself!), and they were just discussing how some of the moms in the family do better staying at home, and some do better working outside the home. This got me wondering if there really are different "mommy personalities"...?? I have often heard moms (some good friends included) say, "I could never stay at home all day with the kids" or "I could never leave my kids and go to work." But those are strong statements, and I wonder if they are really true?? I can see both sides-- I suppose it does take a certain personality to stay home all day, dealing with tantrums, messes, play dates, and endless trips to the zoo, park, etc. And I suppose it takes a certain personality to successfully juggle a career and family life. But it seems to me that we all have a little bit of each, no?? I think it would be hard to find a SAHM who didn't once think about the freedom and personal satisfaction of having a career; and it would be equally hard to find a working mom who doesn't wonder if she should be at home with her children. But I guess that is the whole reason we started this blog, because when it comes down to it, we believe there is a little of both personalities in each of us.

Definitely a thought-provoking subject brought up on my usually mindless reality TV, so I was inspired to blog about it-- thank you Sister Wives! (haha)

  1. I totally agree with this! As you will see in my next post, I feel a little schizophrenic at times as my feelings/desires about me personally working vs. being home are constantly changing! I have to believe it is a balancing act for all moms.

  2. It's definitely a balancing act for all of us, and I was so pleased when a good SAHM friend of mine said she was given a whole new perspective on working moms by reading our blog-- that's what it's all about!

  3. Well HELLO Michelle and Beth!! It's me, Hammer. I came across your blog on your Facebook post. I can't wait to read, cocmment, relect, & share. WHAT A GREAT IDEA!! I just read a couple posts, but I will be reading them all later when the kids are in bed. Speakig of which......I have been in both your shoes. We have 4 kids (Aaron-9, Kate-7, Jacob-5 and Miss Megan-2). I worked full time (VP @ an investment banking firm in Cleveland) until we had our 3rd. Then we decidded to move back to our hometime and now I SAH (I do some part time work for a builder out of Pittsburgh while Megan naps and in the evenings/weekends). IT'S A CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY difficult decision and COMPLETELY PERSONAL (don't ya think??)! I've always said, I would love to hear from mom's that have older children that choose to SAH and then re-enter the work force. I have soo much to say on this topic...I am going to gather my thoughts and keep sharing! I really enjoy both of your perspectives!!

    Many Blessings!

  4. Hi Eva and Lori!! It is so great to hear your comments!! That is exactly what this blog is all about, and we hope to enlist more people to join in the conversation.

Lori-- so glad you are here!!I can't wait to hear more about your life with 4 kids, working, then SAH, and planning to join the workforce again. And you are right-- it is SUCH a personal decision, and I love hearing the different circumstances with each decision-- it gives us all a different perspective.

Eva-- so glad you are following too!! And you are not babbling-- I love hearing all the different circumstances behind the paths we choose for ourselves. I also think its a great idea to share what makes our days work, like how you found evening mommy and me classes-- you truly are doing it all!! It's about that balance for all of us-- great job! And don't worry-- we can help keep you guys busy in the summer :)

Keep following and posting comments!!! This is what helps drives the conversation for all of us!!
